Early Life and Education

Born in May 1985 in the village of Amunekadura, Monaragala District, Ruwan Wijeweera grew up in a region rich with the legacy of Uva Wellassa, a land known for its resistance against English imperialism. Raised in a family deeply connected to this heritage, he developed a strong sense of patriotism from an early age.
His educational journey began at Amunekadura Kanishta Vidyalaya, followed by Mahanama National School, where he quickly emerged as a leader. He held key positions such as Head Prefect, President of the Literary Society, Leader of the Debating Team, and excelled in cadeting. Recognized for his leadership abilities, he represented Monaragala District in international leadership training programs in Singapore.
After completing his secondary education, Ruwan chose the path of teaching. He obtained a National Diploma in Education from the Mahaweli College of Education, Polgolla, and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations (English Medium) from the Open University of Sri Lanka in 2022.

Career Development

After earning his Diploma in Education, Ruwan began his teaching career at Dutugemunu Central College, Buttala, as an English teacher. Alongside teaching, he volunteered to train cadeting students at Pelwatta Navodya Vidyalaya and later at Dutugemunu Central College, successfully leading both schools to all-island competitions.
Recognized for his exceptional leadership, he was later appointed as the Deputy Principal at Dutugemunu College. His passion for education led him to take on the role of Principal at Niyadella Kanishta Vidyalaya, a border village school that had been impacted by terrorism for years. Determined to uplift the students, he worked tirelessly to expand the school, introduce English education, and conduct after-school programs with fellow teachers. Under his leadership, the students of Niyadella Kanishta Vidyalaya achieved unprecedented academic success, making headlines across the country.
Following this achievement, he was transferred to Monaragala Mahanama National School as Principal, where he continued his commitment to educational development.

Transition to Politics for a Better Future

While serving as the Principal of Mahanama National School, Ruwan faced a defining moment in his career: remain in the education sector or step into politics to create broader change. Moved by the challenges facing Sri Lanka and encouraged by his community, he made the decision to step down from his educational role to run for Parliament.
Inspired by visionary leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Ruwan entered politics with a deep commitment to social justice, education, and environmental sustainability. He envisions a Sri Lanka where people and nature thrive in harmony, advocating for policies that uplift communities and drive meaningful change.
