Vision for Wellassa Development
Monaragala District is the 2nd poorest in Sri Lanka. There are 11 divisional secretariat and 319 grama Niladari division with 500500 population. This is the second largest district in the country with population density is 80per square killometer. Total land area is 5508km2 and water area is 131Km2. There are many social issues mainly due to poor education and poverty, so that I believe as a political candidate and a person in Wellassa I have the responsibility to lead the wellassa people towards a better tomorrow. I have planned the development project in wellassa according to our policy in NPP. My main focus is on the development programmes in sectors of Education, Health, Economic development, Agriculture, Entrepreneurship development, Industrial development and social empowerment.
Vision for Wellassa Development
We believe that the development of the country will depend on the healthiness and productivity of its citizen. Non-Communicable diseases and mental health are two main areas where immediate attention is required. As per the NPP policy and policies of Ministry of health, we are planning to conduct health screening and health promotion at each Garma Niladhari Division. We are hoping to minimize the risk behavior among people in Monaragala and promote well-being with this.
As we believe Monaragala is an area where there is a huge capacity to boost its socio-economic environment through the development of tourism. Still, we are not able to provide the essential services to the foreign tourists who are crossing Monaragala from Ella to Potuvil. As we rich with a good biodiversity, historical places and natural beauties, we are here to utilize them for the development of tourism mixed with new concepts such as eco-tourism, agro-tourism etc. So, a well-planned tourist sector has been our main concern.
Lack of industries has made a big impact on the development of this poverty ridden area though there are many natural resources and minerals which can be used as raw materials for various industries. Quarts, iron deposits, sand, gems etc. are the main mineral resources which can be used in this process. It will have a direct impact on the reduction of unemployment rate especially among the young generation.
We will create the best possible opportunities to break away from traditional livelihoods and lead young to create entrepreneurship in various sectors. We will provide facilities for that in every aspect like encouragement for innovations, coordination for technical support, subsidiary financial facilities for initial capital and finding marketing avenue, etc.
District of Monaragala is an agricultural region and it is identified as a region with millions of paddy fields in ancient time. The soil is very rich in the region as well as any cultivation can be done easily with out much burden. I know farmers are happy to farm if they get a reasonable price for their harvest. As a NPP government, we will use modern technology and IT for farming and monitoring the predicted harvest. We will find and create local and international market for our products. As a government we will reduce or band importation of agricultural products as much as possible.
As a former principal and lifelong resident of Monaragala, I understand the challenges in our education system. I am committed to enhancing school infrastructure and, more importantly, to nurturing essential life skills among our children. Developing skills like decision-making, problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, effective communication, and building interpersonal relationships is vital. By fostering self-awareness, empathy, and resilience in coping with emotions and stress, we prepare our children not only for academics but for life.
